Health Science for Seniors program at the Varnum Library presents “Arthritis: Myths and facts”
JEFFERSONVILLE: The Varnum Library presents Health Science for Seniors, an informative and fun series of health care presentations for senior citizens and at-risk populations. The first presentation will take place on September 29th from 11 am to noon. Arthritis: Myths and Facts will cover the causes, symptoms of various forms of arthritis, and include a discussion of current medical treatments. The program is free and open to the public .
The lecture-series will be presented by Marcie Vallette, LPN, M Ed, and BFA. Vallette works from the perspective on a Licensed Nurse to address these questions:
· What is the basic physiology of the illness, body part or condition being discussed?
· How do we take care of ourselves?
· How is this condition treated?
· When do we need to call a doctor?
· What preventative steps can we take so we will have fewer health issues?
“I use peer-reviewed, current materials, my own drawings and other artwork to illustrate my points,” says Vallette. “The presentations are interactive, in that many include guessing games and items to pass around, and time for questions and discussions.”
Vallette has worked in health care and educational settings for over 10 years. She says: “For many people I’ve met, having knowledge about their condition often gives them confidence in their abilities to manage their conditions, and many people with challenges with want to learn more and talk directly about their experiences. “
Health Science for Seniors is scheduled to run the third Monday of every month from 11am to 12 noon. Health Science for Seniors assumes no previous medical knowledge and is designed as a purely educational opportunity.
The program is free. It is geared toward seniors, but all ages are invited. For more information follow us on Facebook,thevarnum@gmail.com, or call 644-2117.
